Hilversum, Garden City of Tomorrow
The Garden City model, pioneered by Ebenezer Howard, aimed to create an alternative for both urban and rural living. An exemplary case in The Netherlands is the town of Hilversum, in which the ideas of the garden city were employed on the scale of an entire town, under the supervision of city architect W.M. Dudok.
In this masterproject, students were challenged to explore the garden city’s evolution and future in the context of Hilversum, through historical analysis and through design. Students were asked to define and elaborate an architectural design proposal for the Kamrad, a postwar residential neighborhood which is part of W.M. Dudok’s Plan Oost for Hilversum.
