The Hypermodern Parliament of Things
The greatest challenge of contemporary architecture appears to be the reconciliation between the endless innovations of modern technology with both the human condition and the world of ecology. At once, the infinite possibilities of the digital realm are posited against the confinements of our planetary boundaries. Both these external worlds are increasingly influencing the internal core of the architectural discipline. One perspective seeking to reconcile the worlds of nature, human and technology strives for a hybridisation between the fundamental categories of ‘nature’, ‘human’, and ‘technology’. Through this process of hybridisation, the ontological essence of these three categories becomes equivalent and their characteristics therefore become transferable. Architecture is likewise subjected to this process of hybridisation through contemporary approaches of bio-inspired design and advanced, digital technologies. The question that remains is: how much authority should we give to non-human things during the design process of architecture?
