Flexible Care-village – Bart van den Boomen
People with dementia often move to an assisted living facility or nursing home if more care is needed. However, the relocations could be stressful experiences. The Flexible Care-village is designed for people in an early, middle and late stage of dementia, so that people experience less relocation stress. Since the sense of home could mitigate relocation stress, the research focused on enhancing the sense of home in a care facility by considering factors in the form of a strategy. The research outcome of dementia stages, architectural- and location specific factors and adaptability resulted into a strategy that was used for a design in a neighborhood in Emmen. Adaptable spaces provide the possibility to stay in the same dwelling within the care facility during the whole process of dementia.
