Hilversum, Garden City of Tomorrow

The Garden City aimed to create an alternative for both urban and rural living. An exemplary case in The Netherlands is the town of Hilversum, in which the ideas of the garden city were employed on the scale of an entire town, under the supervision of city architect W.M. Dudok.

This project focused on Kerkelanden, a garden city neighborhood on the west side of Hilversum, that was developed in the 1960s and 70s. Students analyzed how the (evolving) living ideals of the garden city idea were realized in the urban and architectural design of Kerkelanden. Students were asked to develop and urban and architectural design for Kerkelanden addressing the question: how should Hilversum build forth on the ‘DNA’ of Kerkelanden?
